As far as I know SE made a lot of money with FF11, so that they developed another MMORPG is probably understandable.
IMO, they haven't gone wrong, but well, that's subjective again. My 2 favourite FF games of all time are the most linear in the series, and I was a bit dissapointed with FF12, altough I still finished it. I don't like FFs because of towns, NPCs, sidequests or whatever. I like them because of their story, gameplay, presentation, etc., and these are things that FF 13 did quite well.
