OT:
I'd also rather have unlockables. The way Lords of Shadow handles achievements is fine, isnce they do that in addition to unlockable content, but something like the Metroid Prime series (especially the trilogy) hits it best.
Only a few games nowadays have great unlockable content built into them, and if I had to choose between achievements for Vanquish (and I'll have all of them within a week) versus alternate costumes or concept art, I'll take the costumes and art every day of the week.
