That's 400x240 when you turn 3D off.

Add the processing power required by 3D effects and it would suck up quite a lot of power.

I'm computer challenged, but it seems weird to me, physical resolution of the screen doesn't change with 3D off (and I think it doesn't matter to power drain, brightness on the other hand...), processing power is likely too (still two processed images at the same time even in 2D mode).
