Putting in disk checks would be an equally effective and more consumer friendly thing to do

Disk checks can be bypassed with a simple patch. Key activation on a remote server isn't easily hackable.

 

They've done wonders for stopping PC piracy

but then these hackers cant play online or they'll be banned, which shuts up Activision, i think Sony are more interested in that than piracy tbh.

Oh, definitely. They need to preserve a decent online experience for their paying customers.
