No it isn't, it destroys any community.  How you mean to play with regular players if they are all named the same?

 

I can see it now in the Resident Evil mercs game just hordes of players name Chris, Jill, Leon, Claire, Hunk, Wesker etc.

I think that the best solution is a name ID like Live/PSN but with a option to write a "description" when you add your friend, or to change the name that you see to whatever you want.
