The original post is poorly researched. While it's true that gamers love Metroid, it's also true that Hunters (which was a spring 2006 title, not nearly a launch game) and MOM were not what Metroid fans wanted. One is a FPS and the other one a cinematic game. For a series that is as gamer-centric as the Metroid franchise, a higher userbase does nothing for its sales. An even more extreme example would be Fire Emblem, if you revamped that one completely and made it something it's not supposed to be, then it would suffer in sales as well. Applying reverse logic, both series wouldn't suffer (and they didn't) from a low userbase as long as they are what they are supposed to be.

Sorry I should have looked into the specific date. I just know my DS came with the Hunters Demo as did most DS's at launch. The game was slated for the launch window. Having never bought it or paid attention to Metroid on the handhelds I didn't realize it came out in 06. My bad.
