Allow me to clear up my point, I'm not saying Brawl with additional characters and levels would have sold a lot more copies (I think it's pretty much saturated the market as it is), I'm saying given the huge install base it could have been utilized to help out third parties gain recognition on Nintendo's platform and spur interest in lesser known titles. Just look at sales for Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games, or other cross-overs like DDR Mario Mix as examples.

Of all Nintendo's big evergreen sellers this generation, Brawl is a title that most easily could have accommodated third party content (unlike NSMB, Galaxy, and the "Wii X" series of games). To me that seems like a missed business opportunity to help third parties gain traction and franchise recognition on the Wii. I do agree, however, that this would be pointless if the online system for the game wasn't more robust to begin with.

Then again Nintendo could still do this kind of thing with other games they publish which are "platforms" such as Wario Ware DIY etc.

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!
