I just looked at the clips in the OP and, not having played Mass Effect 1, I don't feel the omission. Yet I don't like the voice acting at all. Too freeking "american soldier" type. Could I say, generic? I would contrast this to the voice of the guy in the trailers for Deus Ex 3: it has feeling, it has a likable character. The story: no surprise anywhere, or none that got through to me. No unexpected, no surprise in the whole narative. At the end, the guy sais that the human flees joined by others defeated the baddie. Then he sais that as a thanxs, the humans are alowed to have a member on the council thing. Is that cocky or what? Are the humand the strongest race but not on the council cause they are young? If they are not the strongest, not the wisest, not the oldest, woudn't at least mentioning the other races be a requirement for politeness? And now come that such an important role as the first human representative on the coucil gets to be elected by a 29 years old guy? - can I say that some parts of the story lacks common sense and that I don't like that?

Outside of the voice acting (which you don't care for) everything else you mentioned are questions you have exactly because you haven't played the first, which is what I think the op is trying to get at.

While I hear what the op is saying, I guess I couldn't see how the interactive comic could ever touch on all that was experienced in ME1 (choices, relationships, paragon/renegade nuances), so I'm not that affected by it's deficiencies.
