I wonder how the recent news that the 3DS will still be using friend codes impacts this. Back in March, the producer of Monster Hunter Tri had this to say when asked about Nintendo's at the time unnanounced handheld:
| "I would like to see any future iteration of the DS provide stronger online functionality. Obviously Monster Hunter games rely very heavily on network gaming and if there is anything that could be improved I would have the online side high on my list." |
Also, the way the statment in the OP is worded implies the 3DS is being used as a barometer for when the next generation is starting (and thus the need to switch platforms arises), rather than that the 3DS is indeed the franchise's next platform of choice.
