I could be wrong, but I think you can earn coins ingame as well, so you don't have to take your 3DS with you at all. This is just an additional way to earn coins that is favorable for people who don't have that much time to play video games.

It doesn't matter if I'm not playing them, I still think they're going overboard with fitness.
