It's over done and keeps getting shoe-horned in where it's not necessary. My 2nd biggest gripe of modern day gaming is that no one wants to play games alone anymore, they want someone else holding their hand (co-op) or literally talking them through it (X-game chat) seriously, just play the damn game yourself and quit being such a little baby.
InFamous 1 was awesome on its own without anybody else involved and so will InFamous 2. What makes matters worse is that games aren't considered "good" anymore unless they involved some form of "co-op", like really- just play by yourself! Not every game has to have a deathmatch/ capture the flag mode to be good.
Another annoying aspect of Multiplayer is when they try to wind it into the story even though it really doesn't belong there as a result killing the feel of the game. I hate anyone who screams "MP/co-op" for uncharted or InFamous' main story because it doesn't belong. Uncharted is all about ONE GUY and his ability to over come impossible odds and each fight for me was always some kind of puzzle that you and you alone had to solve, putting anyone else (including AI allies) always ruined that experience for me. InFamous is about YOU and you alone being the "Super Hero/Villain", the city is YOUR playground and YOU are free to do with it as you wish, the moment anyone else joins, it ruiins the purpose of the game, so no, it can't be "fun" if "done right", because it would mean either shoe horning unnecessary villains into a story where they don't belong or inexplicably creating factory line copies of Cole which will cheapen the uniqueness of his character- there is only one Cole, let's keep it that way!
(Don't get me started on people asking for MP in God of War games.)
