Your decisions from ME1 carry over to ME2. Part of the fun of ME2 is seeing those differences reflected in your quest. ME2 can be enjoyed without playing ME1 but players of ME1 get a lot more out of ME2. Your Ninja Gaiden example isn't the same. You don't make your own custom Ninja in Ninja Gaiden 1 and you can't port your Ninja Gaiden 1 save game into Ninja Gaiden 2. The Ninja Gaiden 1 story plays out the same for everyone that plays it. That's not the case with Mass Effect.
