For me the series has been mediocre starting with X, so the quality of XIII didn't surprise or disappoint me to be honest.

Yeah I agree mostly but I do feel the story's theme was original, at least the one in the datalog was. What we got in the game was 6 hours of cut scenes with the same plot points being repeated and plot points being not even mentioned (those missing plot points were in the datalog). Like I said, just abysmal storytelling.
