True. But still, perhaps the Wii can, somehow, turn things around, if Nintendo wanted it...

if it can be done so swiftly with the 360, then Nintendo could swoop in, steal some of its consumers with heavy advertsising and pull it out of the "blue ocean"

As you say, however, there are countless good mature games for the Wii, however, its reputation muddies its sales and any new potential projects. I expect this to change with the SUPERWii however!

Why would Nintendo need to "swoop in and steal some of their customers".  It would be wasted dollars on advertising for third party companies since third parties are the only ones releasing M rated games on the Wii.  Nintendo could go the route of N64 and release some M rated games such as Perfect Dark or Conkers.  However, the "hardcore" gamers that don't own a Wii probably wouldn't go buy one just because a few more M rated games came out on the Wii.  It would be a failed campaign from the beginning serving no point in selling more systems.  Nintendo didn't have to rely on the Microsoft and Sony M rated game fans to finally get them back in first again and they don't have to rely on them ever.

Sure a few more M rated games would be nice but I don't give a damn what the game is rated.  I buy whatever I view is good.  If you shop around only for M rated games then you are a closed minded gamer.  The entire hardcore / causal debate pisses me off most of the times.  Just like the comic that was posted a few posts up.  Kids these days don't know shit.  Few titles are very hard anymore compared to what they used to release.  Give a kid Ninja Gaiden 1 on NES and see if they can even make it to area 6-2 when shit really hits the fan.
