The obvious answer is: 'the games'.
It's about the same price as the Xbox 360 right now ($250 vs $280 -- although people are paying much more for the Wii). Keep in mind that the Wii is now selling more software -- more games -- than the 360.
Like the DS, it has a lot of games that are just a ton of fun and also a lot of games that are very accessible. Too many games take themselves too seriously lately, and most people aren't prepared to take those games as seriously.
It's all about entertainment. The Wii and the DS deliver it in spades.
