The PS2 also launched at the same price as the Playstation ($300 US), and (when you adjust for inflation) was similar in price to most dominant consoles.
On the topic of 3DS pricing, I think a lot of people are over estimating the price of the 3DS. I see very little reason to believe that the 3DS is dramatically more expensive to manufacture than the DS was at launch; and the current pricing of the Nintendo DS will likely change around launch, and the 3DS being (somewhat) close in price to the Nintendo DS makes the 3DS look like a better value.
