Hmm, if I recall correctly you do have to use a stone, but I think anyone will do. Just make sure you're summoned as a Black Phantom into the boss room. And you can be anywhere in world 3, I was mistaken earlier, just make sure you set the stone in a place players rarely pass through, like inside a Cell in 3-1 or in the borders of the bridge where the arrow trap was.
Also, you'll need to make sure the host dies and you don't have a 100% chance to get the Monk Head's Collar (I've just read it on demonssouls wikidot, and I find this strange, I'm damn sure this wasn't so back when I played it).

Ahh...well I suppose my time of agony will come.

Thanks for the info. One last thing, when players are summoned like this, are they usually around the same SL?
