I max L4D2 at 1080p with 8xAA and still get a great framerate.  Current PCs easily trump consoles in terms of IQ, at the very least, and even the lowest end new PCs can keep up with console visuals these days, assuming the games were optimized for PC properly.

Hell, i was playing the first L4D at 1680x1050 (>720p) on a rig I built in 2006.

True, can't say I've been paying much attention to pricing lately, but a console is still cheaper, and the cost of making a game look good is still rising the better you want it to be. If developers saw much point in pushing the PC, I'm sure you would see it happening more.
