It's all about the size of the server. At some point it's worth splitting up, but spreading over multiple servers looses effeciency. Generally until you need to split over 3 servers (or are spending over $10K/server), it's more effecient and cost effective to have a single larger server. There are other reasons to split up two servers sooner, such as if it's difficult to issolate application from database performance bottle necks, or for high availability reasons.... Another drawback, is most hosting sites charge more for more servers, and the ongoing costs quickly exceeds the hardware costs. In general, one $4,000 server will outpreform two $2,000 servers. Right now the site is running on closer to a $500 desktop level hardware.
Either way, it costs money...
