I see it this way. There is no proof that alien life exists, the only reasoning that we can give to it is chance. Yes, life may be rare (then again, we don't know that), but also there is a large amount of stars with planets orbiting them. Chance would tell you that life has to exist somewhere else.

But that's not the same as something being obvious though, that's just a reasonable assumption. Until we find evidence of extra terrestrial life, then we have no basis to say that life existing elsewhere is obvious.
