I don't remember anyone giving a number like that for the Japan Preview which isn't final sales but a guesstimate of what's going to happen.

And I'd say the guesstimates are pretty good overall. PS3 and Mario Sports Mix where a bit high but the preview wasn't that far off on GT5 and it pretty much nailed Super Robot Taisen L (only ~1k difference!).
