I definitely think the PS3 and Xbox360 will pull it off this year. I think the Wii-Wii ride is slowing down. A lot of people that bought the Wii or are still buying it are reselling it to make a profit because the demand is there. When a product has to be limited just to make consumer starve for it, it makes me wonder why this has to happened to make a suppose awesome system sell. If its that good why do that. It's not a bad system it's juts not the type of system, I think would be in favor for long. I predict a drop in price and slow in sales by the middle of the year. Ok PS3 & Xbox Haters get out your Gunz and start Shooting!!!!
Peace

Lol at reversing cause and consequence.

Even if the sales slow by the middle of the year it will have sold about 1.8M * 6 = 9.6 (let's call it 9 as January should be lower until the supply chain returns to normal) which is still significantly more than either PS3 or 360 did last year. Add in the "slow" sales for the second part (which includes "slow" Christmas sales) and it should still come way ahead of either other console thus making 2008 the year of the Wii... again (though they should do better this year than last).

@Munkeh: That is what people generally mean whn they call it a fad; that when sales start flagging, instead of settling to a high level that is lower than weekly production it will nosedive into abyssmal sales. The OP is calling it a fad but carefully avoids using the word, using the description of a fad instead.

Also, about Europe making up for it as shown by last week's sales I must say I disagree. Europe used not to make up for it, but Europe+Japan did; now the interesting thing about last week's sales is that while the 360 and Ps3 had similar dropoff (in %) in Europe the PS3 had a smaller dropoff (in % still) in America and if it holds true in the coming week it is a good sign for the PS3 there (as it is its weakest market). However if the smaler dropoff is due to a better boxing day deal then it should have a bigger dropoff next week to compensate (so that the dropoff over both week would be similar). We will see in the net 2-3 weeks how things shape out and how much of an effect the 40GB will have out of the holiday season.

@Avinash: While GTA will not have an effect on raw Wii sales it will undoubtedly improve both 360 and PS3 sales, thus affecting the sales ratio between the Wii and the other consoles and making it harder for the Wii to gain marketshares then (maybe even lose some).

@Sorrow: I thought Nintendo had a good idea (financially for them, not for us customers) to start it at $250 instead of $200 as it was guaranteed to sell a lot of consoles at launch. I thought they could then drop it to $200 after 6-10 months to reach the mass market price for Christmas 07 and that that combined with the early success (that was obvious due to both E3 06 and mainstream TV's reaction to Wii Sport) would make them succesful. As it turned out, $250 seems to be a mass market price.

@Mummelman: It is only logical as the title ask which console it would be the year of and it is very unlikely not to be the year of the Wii. Also, the post itself referenced the Wii so it was not only the PS3/360. If PS3/360 fans do not want the Wii inserted in such thread then they should be careful in the way they phrase their titles. Compare:

"2008 the year of the PS3 or Xbox"

"Which of the PS3 and 360 is going to do better in 2008"

Wii banter would have no place in the latter as it is not about it (unless introduced by a PS3 or 360 poster trolling the Wii as they are then inviting such responses... like the OP for example) but has a place in the former as it is stupid to ask if it will be the year of the PS3 or of the 360 while ignoring the console that is most likely to win the year.

Although I do realise that you probably are tired of Wii fanboys(/girls/boys-pretending-to-be-girls) crashing such thread but I think that you chose the wrong thread to complain about it.

@Gebx: "I have so little trust left in MS's management, I wouldn't be surprised if they cancelled all the SKU's and only sold the new rumoured Ultimate for $699 and then raised their global shipment goal to 35 million for the end of fiscal 2008."

So that's why Sony seems to be doing better moves recently, all the crazy management took a job at Microsoft's game division ;) ... Just joking at your funny post, I do not know why you distrust MS's game division's management so much. They did quite well I thought (assuming that their goal is now to become profitable and not to become number 1 this gen as the Wii is gonna keep the PS3 in check so they don't need to sink billions to do it themselves).

@Twestern: "Yeah, you really must live in a nice little cozy box."

With very soft walls and no sharp objects perhaps?
