In all honesty I would say American English is used more. Does it really matter, not so much.
I taught English for over 5 years and I found my students got way too hung up on which was more popular, which one they should learn, which was more correct or 'better'. If you achieve English profiency and fluency and with an accent anything like ANY native speaker you will be doing very well.
