Because they can't make a Sony vs Nintendo war credible anymore.

Let's face it, the only time they ever could do it credibly was when the PSone was just on the market.

N64 was actually fairly competitive in the US during 1996-1999, and Nintendo's own software still generally matched or exceeded the best PS1 sellers.  

Early DS vs PSP (2004-2005) was pretty competitive too.
