Very few things have great sales in Japan. This is why 99% of developers are not dependent on Japan a lone.
With that said, its a solid opening and it exceeded most expectations. I think it could have performed much better if the average Japanese living space was actually big enough to accommodate the Kinect.
Frankly, lack of space is hurting the Kinect around the world and its still performing great.
