obviously the mario kart games have sold more overall, as the series stretches back much further, but this is the next smash after the release of melee. Look at the difference between MK 64 and Double Dash, the sales drop some 3 million units, whereas smash has only increased. Also, the game has built a huge amount of hype, for both the casual as well as the hardcore. I don't know an individual who hasn't played smash. They are both going to sell incredibly, but I personally think Smash is going to take the cake.
Mario Kart: (Lifetime) 9.7 million
Brawl: (Lifetime) 12.3 million
