To me, MK has a bigger appeal to the casual gamer crowd. Yes, Brawl is at its best when its 4 people going at and is a party game as well. But racing is more accessible then fighting to the casual audience.
I think Mario Kart will be a bigger beneficiary of the Wii install base then SSB:Brawl will be. I think Brawl is a system seller, whereas Mario Kart is not. So I think last generation sales were closer to the actual amount of Brawl fans out there. (since they would buy the GC no matter what) Whereas I think there are much less people who would buy a system just to play MK
