Nintendo has just announced that Mario Sports Mix will be released in the UK on 4 February.

Mario Sports Mix is the plumber's next Wii game. Developed by Square-Enix (who also made Mario Slam Basketball for DS), it is a compilation of four sports - hockey, basketball, volleyball and dodgeball.

As well as Mushroom Kingdom all-stars such as Wario, Waluigi and Bowser, you'll be able to play as characters from Final Fantasy games, a Slime from Dragon Quest and your Mii.

As you might expect, these sports aren't realistic (you can play as a blue blob with no arms after all - how does he play basketball?). You can collect coins and Mario Kart items such as banana skins and green shells.

Each character in the game has a different special move. Daisy can fill an opponent's half of the court with flowers while Wario can fire a yellow bomber shot.

Just like Mario Kart, there are different cups to compete in including Mushroom, Flower and Star Cups. Here, you'll play as your chosen Nintendo characters and pit your skills eight teams to become champion of each sport. Once you've done this, additional characters and courts will be unlocked.

There are also special challenges and four mini games to complete. Each mini-game is inspired by a different sport.

In Feed Petey - a basketball mini-game - you must grab low-hanging fruits from the ceiling and aim them directly into the mouth of Petey the piranha plant.

Smash Skate has you pushing players off a ledge using your hockey stick to perform charged shots.

Bomb-omb Dodge requires you to dodge bombs that are shot by cannons at each corner of the Dodgeball court.

Harmony Hustle chucks different coloured volleyballs at you and you must catch the one of your own colour to avoid traps.

The game also features a multiplayer mode for up to four players.

I'm still undecided on this myself, but I can imagine this selling quite well.  I'm wondering how a slime can play volleyball though
