generally 50hz games have these horrid borders at the top and bottom of the screen and play slower with slower music.

A perfect example is the original Sonic on the Mega Drive/Genesis:

an even worse example is the NES Castlevania:

It usually isn't as noticable when you don't play them side by side.  For example I have Gunstar Heroes on the VC and I didn't notice it was slow until I saw my friend playing it on his 360 and realised that the music was considerably faster.
