for shame Kasz216 that there was no internet or gamefaqs for you back in that day! I did not have a second person either, but alas it can be done alone. Beat the end boss with one extra life remaining. The very moment you beat him, pause the game, and push select to make P2 appear on the bottom right of the screen.
Wola! Happy ending achieved. You missed out on some awesome bonus levels BTW. 20 or 30 of them? Can't remember for sure.
I don't know if this trick will be implented on the VC version, but if its a perfect emulation of the game, we can certainly hope it still works.
