2 PS3 SKUs were necessary, with a high end product like the PS3, the best way to appeal to a mass market is to release a cheaper version and in order to do that, Sony had to remove features. The reason the 20GB did not sell is that $500 is a lot of money, and most people thought it was better just to go to the 60GB as they are paying so much anyway

Ibelieve that the reason the 20GB failed was because Sony set it up to fail.

It was here solely so that Sony could claim a cheaper entry point but at the time they were persuaded that they could easily sell millions of PS3's at $600 so they didn't want the 20GB to be the best seller as they lost more money on that.

Fast forward a year and the PS3 performed badly enough that they felt necessary to lose even more money with a $400 SKU so maybe they should have tried to push it more and produce more of them in the first place.
