Ibelieve that the reason the 20GB failed was because Sony set it up to fail.
It was here solely so that Sony could claim a cheaper entry point but at the time they were persuaded that they could easily sell millions of PS3's at $600 so they didn't want the 20GB to be the best seller as they lost more money on that.
Fast forward a year and the PS3 performed badly enough that they felt necessary to lose even more money with a $400 SKU so maybe they should have tried to push it more and produce more of them in the first place.
