So despite the supposed dying sales, that are still ahead of the PS2, the Wii is still going along. The 3DS needs to be established first anyway, so that Nintendo doesn't stretch themselves. Plus if anything about the 3DS doesn't work out, Nintendo will be going to correct it with the next home system, while being about to try to incorporate anything that does work (and can be adapted from a handheld to home system).
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
