It's whatever you want it to be. 
I mean, the game is extremely similar to Red/Blue, so could it be a continuation or an expansion to the game? Sure. Could the experience for you be a unique one so that you count it as your own game? Definitely.
There's very few rules for a reason. I want your top 50 games to be unique to each person. I mean, I even had one person put all of the Animal Crossing games as one entry. I even had one guy put the Anaconda mini-game from TimeSplitters 2 on his list!
So do whatcha gotta do.
EDIT: By the way, we have Seventy (70) users participating so far. That's just nuts. And awesome.
