Once again, it all depends on what chapter you are. Also, are you using Auto-Battle or are you choosing your own commands? 

It doesn't take long to know what "Auto" will do so I use "auto" except when i want to do something different. Still Paradigm shifts made the real difference so even on the harder battles I just hit "X" 95% of the time. A hint that the combat system is a little shallow is all your characters "auto" heal at the end of every battle. Of course less micromanagement yet micromanagement is  suppose to be part of role playing.
