I say he should try writing short stories, so he can get some practice with that. Heck, that applies to a lot of game writers. I don't think vision and ambition is a substitute for talent. I should know. I have stories in my head that I consider ambitious and visionary, but I certainly know I need a lot of practice to even start to pull them off.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
