Use media player classic; download the K-lite codec pack. Or alternatively you can try VLC player (I don't use it but I've heard it's good for virtually everything). You can find more info and downloads on here:
I found the K-lite codec pack pretty much covers all file types and is pretty good for HD stuff in MKV format. You can select which files you do and don't want Media Player Classic to be the default player on (as in you'll still be able to use DivX or Windows Media Player if you want).
