I believe they told stores to stop taking pre-orders because they would not be able allocate enough units to fill the pre-orders. They need to fill orders for stores that did not do pre-orders (Target, Best Buy, etc), so the stores that had pre-orders could not keep bumping their orders if their pre-order numbers exceeded their initial shipment numbers. Basically they needed to make sure they had enough units to fill initial orders made by multiple companies.

Apparently not all, I just checked Amazon.com and they do not have stock. Neither does buy.com, it clearly states that they are sold out of launch days units but they will get more unit in soon. The only sales available are by individual sellers at a huge markup. Target.com and Bestbuy.com does not have any units for sale either. The Kinect Sensor units are sold out in many places.
What pre-order stores have the Kinect Sensor in stock?
