While it is possible the comments were taken out of context, the intent certainly appears to be to belittle the Wii. And since this is not the first time that David Cage has made this type of statement (see 2008), he does not get the benefit of the doubt.
What statements of this type demonstrate is that there are people who cannot figure out how a machine that is clearly technologically inferior to its competition has sold more. This is the first time that it has really happened in the video game industry since the crash of 1983/1984. (To be truthful, the more advanced machine usually did not win and often it was the least advanced machine. But in all previous generations, the differences were small while this time they are dramatic.)
If you want to see another example of the industry belittling the Wii, check out Industry Gamers. In particular, read the Ubisoft interview: http://www.industrygamers.com/news/ubisoft-we-want-to-get-america-dancing/ and http://www.industrygamers.com/news/ubisoft-defends-wii-were-not-sounding-the-death-knell-on-it-yet/
Ironically, the Wii's seasonal sales pattern makes it to more toy-like than consoles have been recently (not that other consoles do not have seasonal peaks). But a lot of people seem to forget how many Wiis sold last holiday and the price cuts by the other two consoles.
