Well, kind off, we just reach a saturation point quickly and since we don't care a lot about the graphics, the small changes doesn't make enough difference to buy another game the next year. That's the reason why Nintendo doesn't release another Smash or Mario Kart in the same generation and they keep selling fo a long time.
