Mine handles a 32GB one, without freezing or slowing down (while using it).
However, putting a lot of music on it wasn't a good idea and I ended up barely using the card - it took a very long time to scan and index the files and there doesn't seem to be a cashing system that keep the data after the system's turned off.
Browser was free to download from the DSi store, probably still is seeing that even the Wii one is free now.
