I don't know why Nintendo would want to use this in 3DS. It probably works more or less the same way as Bluetooth, which they need fot the handheld to be able to communicate with Wii. And having both means higher cost for no apparent reason.

Wii uses bluetooth for communication with the remotes but remember that it also has built in Wi-Fi.

Galaki, this was my first thought when I read this story late last night because it sounds so similar to what Nintendo have been talking about (while being vague enough not to give it away before the tech is announced).

True. However, I imagine that both sides of the communication need theis function if you want to use it. And Wii doesn't have it AFAIK

Armads: DS is not using WiFi for DS-to-DS communication. It's using Bluetooth... which has something like what, 15 meters range? Not very good compared to what this WiFi Direct is supposed to have, I know, but still better than having two chips in the handheld to do the same work, I think.

I suspect if the 3DS has it, their next home console will also.  I've already ben told their next home console and the 3DS will interface together and I suspect this will be it.

And the DS does not have Bluetooth at all.  It has Wi-Fi.
