I know a good amount of culture from England and Italy, so don't highly doubt anything please...
It's not a little thing actually. The rest (or majority) of the world does it. It's like knowing the difference between kilometers and decimeters and a 24 hour clock is used extensively throughout Earth.
And that's another problem. It helps to know the cultures of other countries, and the mindset of "I'M AN AMERICAN!" isn't all that conducive.
