Download the PSN version of MGS1, it's story is probably 1/3rd-1/2 story relating to MGs4. The other's are 2 3 obviously... and imo 1 is better than 4... and then get 4.
Wait don't download PSN version... if you have a decent PC, play MGS1 on the epsxe emulator or theirs a PC version (But it's quite expensive on ebay), it looks better... buy it legally or do not so legal things.. I do not care.
And I don't recommend you do it darth's way, because when people explain it to you, you might not care. And the series is great anyways. Imo if you don't like mgs1 you won't like 4... unless you plan to skip the cutscenes in 4.
