No, the starter pack alone does not determine new households with Move. I don't think anyone was saying Move has a 2.5 million userbase... Sports champions has sold more than 30k in the U.S. Kinect games entering the charts means nothing for Move sales. You've got to realize that the so called Move launch titles were and are not the only Move enabled games. Millions have already bought Heavy Rain, RE5 Gold Edition, MAG and Eyepet to name a few. |
The problem is though if you realisticly look at it those numbers could mean anything. They could mean 2.5m Move compatible products for all we know i.e games ala RE5 etc.. The fact Sony didn't release any actual numbers means there is probably a reason why they didn't do that. They didn't go into details.
What we do know for a fact is that for 14 days on sale SC sold just 38k in UK. One of the biggest gaming markets on the planet. There are 3.2m PS3's in the UK. That is nearly 1m more then any other EMEAA country. That is a lot of PS3's there. But yet only 38k of them in september bought Sports Champions.
Move is not out in japan so at the time of release the UK represented the 2nd biggest Sony market. If we assume this 2.5m means controllers/starter packs then that is just crazy. People mention it is sold out but yet today in Best Buy i saw literally shead loads of starter packs in the 20% off sale. For a product supposedly so much in demand why is it in the sale? Why on websites such as play has it fallen to number 28 in the charts? Something selling 2.5m units you would think would be riding high right? Like Fifa for example. Pretty much been number 1-5 the past 3 weeks in the charts. However that has sold a lot less then 2.5m on PS3. Are Sony seriously suggesting that Move is more popular then Fifa? Obiously that would be silly. The other question is then if in UK it is doing bad what regions is it doing well? The rest of europe?
The next best PS3 selling region in europe is france. But if you look at the french chart that Giggs puts up your see Sports Champions is not in the top 10. In Holland it didn't make the top 10. Norway was 6th, 12th in Sweden, 18th in UK, 8th in Finland, 10th in Italy, 8th in Denmark, didn't make it into the top 10 in Germany, etc etc. Point being as you can see on every chart it is outside the top 6 and on the majority of european charts outside the top 10. For a product to be selling as much as Sony try to imply it would be far more noticable. Like for example let's look at Fifa 11 for the same week on PS3. 1st in Holland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, France, Germany and Denmark. 2nd in Italy, 5th in UK. Basically first or 2nd in every region in Europe. And how much did it sell for that week? 150k....
So a game that was number 1 nearly everywhere sold 150k. How much did Sports Champions sell? 23k....
It is about being logical .Sony said in their statement that they shipped 1.5m controllers to europe. Seeing as SC has sold in total 258k there that would indicate that there were 1.2m people in europe who had not bought that game. Seeing as it is the flagship game it would be more dominant in the regions games charts, which it hasen't.
Which basically then boils down to what Sony define as a Move unit? Either way whatever people decide that to be there are not 2.5m people playing Move. There are probably not even 1m people playing Move. Because if there were why would they buy the controller but not the flagship game?
So in terms of Kinect versus Move you simply can't compare them. Because when we see Kinect sales we will know each one is to a unique house. It is unlikely you will find more then 1 Kinect in a home. However you could find multiple Move controllers in a home. MS when they report numbers will say what it sold, they won't put it in some code. They will say Kinect sold XYZ amounts. Sony for some reason don't want to do that. I personally would guess Move sold to around 500k-600k unique buyers. I would expect Kinect to sell more then that in it's first week easily.
