Yeah, Nintendo really fucked up Japan this year :/

It was doing so good in the beggining of the year thanks to NSMB Wii and then they just let momentum go again. They could have easily surpassed 2009 sales in Japan if it wasn't so bad now, I'm not so sure they still can.

Releasing what? Metroid? Mario? Zelda?? Kirby??? Nothing in Japan could help Nintendo in a considerable way...not software at least, that's a lost battle, Nintendo has released about everything they could for Wii to help sales; it just can't keep selling without a whole market (3d party's one).

Uf they had released a decent old-school Metorid, that is what Japan wants, like the original or even Super Metorid, it migh have sold system. If they didn't had to release their Galaxy Expansion Fun pack that didn't help shit, they might have concentrating in making a game that actually sell systems.

You have two ways of suceed in Japan: being tremendously traditional (see what happened to Metroid when it changed with the Prime series) or release just big IPs. They have the bigger IPs: Pokemon, Mario, Kirby, Zelda...with third parties support the sucess would be immediate. Unfortunately there's not this support, and unfortunately (for the, so called, "hardcores") they've to try new ways of gaming in order to find new markets...Metroid is an example of this change, like Zelda will be. The real change is not Wii Sports or Wii Fit, they're just new successful IPs...the real change is in the evolution of main games: look at Mario Galaxy, at Metroid Other M, at the new Zelda; this kind of experiments usually can't meet high demand, especially in Japan. Should they stick with 2d Marios, 2d Metroid, Ocarina-style Zelda, a Mario Kart, some Mario Parties and Starfox/F Zero/Animal Crossing/Donkey Kong? Probably for Japan market they should, but it really can't work worldwide. They have to look at every market and contemporary increase their size, so that they'll be able to produce more games and not run into this tipe of situations again. For now, releasing some JRPGs and making bundles is the only way to push hardware.

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)
