Yes, but only for better controller tracking. If you point off screen, the controller will still be able to know where you're position is, instead of just centering your aim back to the middle of the screen or continuously spinning in a circle.
There are no melee weapons in Conduit 2 as far as my knowledge goes, they could possibly add one in the future, but I doubt it.
