It wasn't late, I'm pretty sure Sony was expecting to ramp it up AFTER release, going along with their whole slow burner thing.

Yep, I was considering this hypothesis, but ads before and around launch were so scarce that, except stores leaflets, I started seeing them on TV the week AFTER. Ramping up marketing can be a legit strategy, but this way it looked to me like a little bit excessive.
