After doing some research PS2 did fall below 10k in Japan in 2000 but that was clearly because of supply problems since it happened just at the start of the holidays. Looking at the crazy numbers the PS2 was pulling that year I'm actually kind of shocked that Sony didn't have supply problems prior to that.
