The game is simply amazing . First of all it is huge and really makes you feel like you are on an epic quest. I must have dedicated over 25 hours in it and i am still in chapter 10 (it has 12) . The variety in locations is breathtaking , i've never seen anything like this in an action game ,
The gameplay is also extremely varied and changes constantly. The first part of the game (the lycan world) is mostly GOW-like affair with a bit more platforming thrown in , esp. in its second part. The second part of the game (Vampire world) is more classic castlevania in 3D, having lots of platforming, exploration and devilish puzzles .
The third part is mostly a combination of the first 2 parts, in terms of gameplay.
The game throws a lot of bosses to you and is quite difficult so that might piss some people off. Some rooms are extremely frustrating and take a lot of patience to escape from. Lots of old school/hardcore stuff in terms of design .
Did i mention the art ??Breathtaking, the sights that you'll see in this game are fantastic. From the big Castles of the vampires to the brothers Grimm-inspired level of the witch this is a feast for the eyes. The fact that the game is technically excellent with great graphics certainly helps but it's the art that makes it stand out.
The music is also fantastic, epic stuff. I've turned all the way up in the audip menu and slightly lowered the volume of sound effects so that i can hear it better during gameplay. It switches to from epic "battle" tunes to sentimental "mellow" ones .The speech of course is top notch with some great actors in there.
All in all this is one of my favourite games ever and i have to congratulate mediamercury and Konami for making such a long and satisying experience in an age when 6-8 hour single player campaigns are the norm for everything non-rpg and downloadable content is the regular thing to prolong these 6-8 hours games. The fact that this super long game has NO REPEAT LEVELS WHATSOEVER and no backtracking only makes their achievement greater.
