The reason Wii can perfectly emulate GameCube is because the identical architecture allows Wii to simply drop into "GameCube mode" when a GameCube disc is inserted, so it drops back to GameCube specs and any and all Wii functionality disappears (including use of the Home Button or any ability to soft-reset back to the Wii Menu)
So you need to consider the Wii to be a GameCube, as far as "What do i need to play GameCube games" is concerned.
